Spoken Word Poetry

On Tuesday 19th September, Old Edwardian Jasmine Gardosi returned to KEHS to deliver an assembly on Spoken Word Poetry. Jasmine, who is a former BBC Arts Young Creative, Birmingham Poet Laureate finalist 2016/18 and former Midlands Slam Champion, talked about our Spoken Word Poetry club which takes place every Friday lunchtime.

Jasmine spoke to girls about how the art of ‘spoken word’ is performed and how successful it has become in recent years. Jasmine also gave us examples of famous spoken word poets – choosing to juxtapose Shakespeare with Eminem! She highlighted the variety of spoken word ‘open-mic’ sessions that are available throughout Birmingham. Not only does Jasmine write and perform poetry, she also runs a variety of workshops and features as a guest speaker at numerous spoken word events. Jasmine emphasised how the girls can use spoken word as a route into public speaking as well as using poetry to draw attention to important issues.

As an example of Spoken Word Poetry, Jasmine showed us a clip of Spoken Word Poet Lily Meyers and her piece on ‘Shrinking Women.’
